These attires have created quite a controversy in the body of Christ. Should men wear skirts? Should women wear trousers?
Over the years, many pastors have preached that women that wore trousers were going to hell fire but we need to examine everything in the light of God’s Word.
The pertinent question is, “where is this doctrine from?”
Most often, the scripture used to back this doctrine up was Deuteronomy 22:5, which says,
“A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this.”
I know that a lot has been written on this but I just want to bring our attention to the facts as they existed during this time and now. In Bible times, men wore garments like dresses just like women but obviously the way they were styled was different.
Today, we have trousers for men and trousers for women, which are styled according to their physique. Hence, when a woman or man puts on what is not made for their sex, people would know. In some cultures, men wear dresses and skirts, while women wear trousers for many sporting activities and even for convenience.
The angle I would like to focus on right now is on our motives as well as how we wear what we choose to wear them.
There are long slim fitting and clinging dresses that women of virtue should not wear. There are some fabric materials that should not be made into dresses because of the way they bring out the shape of the woman in a seductive manner. The Bible says,
- We must not make each other stumble (Romans 14:21 – It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.)
- We must do everything to God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.)
- Our bodies are God’s temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.)
My conclusion is this, BE LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD.
Most importantly, let us evaluate our dressing and ask ourselves questions and respond honestly.
“Is it covering what should be covered?”
“If it is covering what should be covered, is it the proper size or is it too clingy?”
“Am I dressing to get attention from others or to dress for success and for God’s glory?”
“Is sexy a Godly way to be described?”
Now, these questions apply to both men and women. I admire people who dress well, smart and are presentable. Just because we are Christians does not mean we should not have proper dress etiquette and dress sense. But, everything must be done in moderation and in a pleasant manner.
There are clothes that are so tight fitting that the person’s under garments are exposed for all to see. Some men love to show off their chests and these days, a lot of young men go out wearing just singlets and small shorts, all in the name of showing off their abs. For who and why?
Let us not forget the spiritual implication of how we dress. You will be addressed as you dress most often and worse, you may attract demonic spirits like the spirit of lust and spiritual spouses to yourself.
You might think I am being religious or fanatical but this is the REAL TRUTH. We live in a spiritual world no matter how much we don’t want to believe it.
Galatians 6:7 says,
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”
Sisters, stop seducing people at church or at work. That tight skirt or dress; that mini dress or skirt; that so skin tight trouser is not God’s way of presenting you to the world. We are Christ’s ambassadors.
Brothers who are beefy, please wear decent clothing. Some wear suits that seem would tear apart because of how small they are, all in the name of looking good. If you don’t remember anything else from this article, remember that we are representing our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. The focus is not me and you; it is Christ who died and rose and wants the world reconciled back to the Father. Let us wake up and work, for the harvest is plenty but the labourers are few.
It is not about me. It is about soul winning and showing forth the GLORY of our GOD.
2 Corinthians 5:20
“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”
I am not forcing anyone to dress in a certain manner, but like any issue, we cannot overcome unless we go to the roots. You have nothing to lose by living your life to glorify God and more to gain.
Philippians 1:21 says,
“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
I will rather be laughed at by the world than lose God’s applause and approval. It is better to gain God’s “Well done” than the world’s applause.
God loves you beyond what you could ever imagine. Living for Him is the ultimate LIFE GOAL. Stay blessed and limitless.
